The far north tropics are now open to Christchurch after Jetstar began flying three times a week to Cairns Airport at the start of April.
Their new service is the first non-stop connection between the destinations and will add 70,000 seats annually, injecting an estimated $20 million to the Cairns economy in the first 12 months, the airport says.
Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said the new service means cheaper and easier trans-Tasman travel.
“This service is commencing at an ideal time, ahead of the lengthy Easter school holidays when families and friends are keen to reconnect,” he says.
“This route provides a seamless gateway between New Zealand’s picturesque South Island and the many attractions of Tropical North Queensland … we expect this service will entice a new market of travellers across both destinations.”
Jetstar’s Executive Manager Customer Jenn Armor says the new route is part of their low-fare travel strategy to drive tourism across the Tasman.
“We’re thrilled by the response from New Zealanders and Australians to this new connection. Queenslanders can now fly direct to Christchurch in under six hours.”
Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen also welcomed the new service.
ALICE SPRINGS SERVICE
On Monday (April 14), Airnorth’s inaugural direct flight between Alice Springs and Cairns took off.
The new tri-weekly service, that will be flown by an Embraer E190 jet, is expected to offer more than 30,000 seats annually and boost domestic and international visitation.
Trade and Business Minister Robyn Cahill says the new service is “a game-changer for Central Australia” by providing greater access and better air links.
“It’s a fantastic outcome for both regions,” she says.
Tourism Central Australia Chair, Patrick Bedford says that “improved air access is critical to the success of our region”.
Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said the airline is proud to expand its network with this new service.
“We’re thrilled to provide greater accessibility and choice for travellers,” he says.
