Using caravans as temporary quarters for those displaced by disasters will be the goal of a new NSW Government program.

The At Home Caravan Program will establish a panel of suppliers able to deliver caravans during disaster recovery.

The program is designed to support the NSW Reconstruction Authority and will only activate after a disaster to those who lost their homes.

Caravans will be located on the affected resident’s property, allowing them to stay as they rebuild or relocate.

NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin says “safe and stable accommodation is one of the most urgent needs for people recovering from a disaster”.

“By expanding the Disaster Recovery Standing Panel to include caravan suppliers, we are able to help people stay on their land,” she says.

“This is about being better prepared and making sure practical housing solutions can be delivered quickly when they are needed most.”

CARAVANS AN OPTION

The authority’s executive director for recovery, Ashlee Abbott says the caravan program “has proven to be a critical option for communities recovering from disasters, particularly in regional and rural areas”.

“Establishing a dedicated panel of caravan suppliers means we can act faster, with confidence, and scale up temporary accommodation when future events occur.

“It also gives industry a clear pathway to support recovery efforts and play a direct role in helping communities through some of their toughest moments.”

A panel of suppliers will be formed under the Standing Panel, established late last year, to support the rapid deployment of caravans in the wake of floods, bushfires, storms and other emergencies.

The government says that an open market Request for Quotation (RFQ) will identify capable companies able to supply caravans quickly where the need is greatest.

Suppliers appointed to the Standing Panel need to be part of a pre-qualified network of suppliers, ready to be activated when needed.

The RFQ is running until Wednesday, March 18, and can be accessed via the Buy NSW website. You must be a registered supplier to access the RFQ.
