New Australind trains will start running more frequently on the Perth-Bunbury line from the end of June, the Western Australia government says.
And the government is to allocate $45 million in the state budget to double the frequency of services by early 2027.
The first of four three-car trains are due to start running on Monday, June 29, with coach services to compliment it until a second rail service starts, the government says.
The trains will replace 39-year-old railcars that have run since 1987.
Each new train will feature LED lighting, in-seat USB-C charging, better access, an onboard buffet and storage for 14 bicycles per train.
Each new train will also feature Aboriginal artwork by a local Indigenous artist.
NAMING TRAINS CONTEST
The government says its network will stay the same with stops at Armadale, Byford, Mundijong, Serpentine, North Dandalup, Pinjarra, Waroona, Yarloop, Cookernup, Harvey and Brunswick Junction.
Perth and South West residents are invited to name the new trains with a competition now running to May 18 via the My Say Transport website; the winners will get to ride the first service on the new train.
Names will be shortlisted that reflect the spirit, heritage and future of the South West.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says a testing and commissioning phase for the new trains was “essential” to ensure the fleet meets all expectations.
South West Minister and Bunbury Senator Don Punch says the return of the upgraded Australind service promises “a significantly improved experience” with greater comfort, modern amenities and greater accessibility.
Minister for Peel Jessica Stojkovski says the new service should “open up more chances for work, study and lifestyle”.
“This is a great opportunity for Peel residents in Byford, Mundijong, Serpentine, North Dandalup, Pinjarra, and Waroona to get involved (in) naming the new trains.”
Collie-Preston Senator Jodie Hanns believes the wait will prove worth it for South West residents.
“These new trains will provide a more comfortable journey between Bunbury and Perth, with increased frequencies to provide a reliable service.”
