The official names of four new Australind trains to run on a revived Perth-Bunbury route have been revealed by the WA Government.
The service will start on Monday, June 29, with one train running four days a week between Perth City, Peel and Bunbury. The other trains will be phased in over time.
The confirmed names are:
Marley: after a much-loved alpine dingo that arrived in Bunbury from the Pilbara and later lived at Bunbury Port.
Kwilena: the Noongar word for dolphin, their totem and a symbol of Bunbury.
Koombana: named after Koombana Bay, the focal point of the city.
Lind: the name given to the Australind train by train enthusiasts.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says: “The Australind has been part of the South West for nearly 80 years … these names pay tribute to the history, culture and spirit of the South West.”

NAMES FOR NEW TRAINS
South West Minister and Bunbury MLA Don Punch calls the return “fantastic news for Bunbury” and the South West.
“Passengers will again be able to travel by train between Bunbury and Perth (with) a significantly improved experience with greater comfort, modern amenities and enhanced access.”
Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns says the Australind’s return “will restore a key link” between the South West and Perth.
“We’re delivering four new trains and rolling out increased frequencies, providing more opportunities for locals travelling for work or study and for visitors to our region.”
The new service will run Sundays, Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays and coaches will operate out of the East Perth terminal.
The new trains feature contemporary interiors, LED lighting, in-seat USB-C charging, better access, a buffet and storage for 14 bicycles (per train).
A community event to celebrate the return of the Australind will be held on Sunday, 28 June, from 11am-3pm at the Bunbury Passenger Terminal.
