Stay alert and stay safe is the message Queensland Rail wants commuters to heed after releasing new video of close calls and falls at its train stations.

Queensland Rail has released new footage of risky behaviour as part of TrackSafe Foundation's Rail Safety Week; these include a near-miss between a free dog, its owner and a train, as well as falls down stairs and dangerous last-minute attempts to beat closing train doors.

The dog and owner were not injured but last financial year, 332 travellers were hurt on the SEQ network (see video below).

Qld Rail says the figures are falling compared to previous years.

General Manager Security and Emergency Preparedness Drew Brock says the vision demonstrates how quickly every day travel can turn into a serious incident if safety isn’t taken seriously.

“Usually, people are hurt because they're running, distracted by their phones or trying to beat closing doors,” he says.

“We're also seeing a lot of incidents involving luggage, bikes or scooters on escalators.

“Take your time, avoid rushing and distractions, hold the handrail and stay behind the yellow line.

“We also remind customers that the only animals allowed on our trains and stations are certified assistance animals and they must be restrained.”

HOW TO STAY SAFE

• Stay behind the yellow line until the train comes to a complete stop.

• When travelling with small children, hold their hands and mind the gap.

• Use lifts or ramps when carrying large items.

• Pay attention to your surroundings. Look up, not down at your phone, when walking through stations, on platforms, and when boarding or disembarking.

• Plan your journey and arrive early – avoid rushing for your train.
