Uber will be expanding its app in the UK to include more modes of transport with developers calling it a new “super app”.
An announcement on Wednesday revealed that several more travel options will be available for UK users by the end of the year. People will be able to book rides on trains, buses and planes while also being able to rent a car through the service provider.
According to the Financial Times, Uber will be releasing their travel partners over the coming months with Uber UK CEO Jamie Heywood having said that the company hopes all forms of transport will be available through the app.
“You have been able to book rides, bikes, boat services and scooters on the Uber app for a number of years, so adding trains and coaches is a natural progression,” he said.
“Later this year we plan to incorporate flights, and in the future hotels, by integrating leading partners into the Uber app to create a seamless door-to-door travel experience.”
This new venture comes in conjunction with the launch of Uber Explore which will allow customer to book experiences such as events, dinner, and concerts. The latest addition is only currently available in select cities across the US, and it is not yet known when it will make its way to Australia.
Only Uber Eats and the traditional Uber service as well as more recently Uber Pool is available in Australia, but people overseas have had a diverse reaction to the announcement with @ghosh121 saying “Oh Boy! Now the pilot will cancel”. While @siddhantdas33 said “sure, why not”.
Uber has previously had several partnerships with third party services including helicopter flights from New York City to nearby JFK airport as well as boat rides along the Thames in London. They also have recently listed NYC taxis on the app.
