Olympic rowing is going to crocodile territory in Rockhampton and Mackay may get cricket if it becomes a designated sport.
And a new stadium to be built at Victoria Park is set to be challenged in court.
Premier David Crisafulli today unveiled the $7.1 billion 2023 Delivery Plan that is expected to deliver venues in time for the 2032 Olympic Games and Paralympics.
“To host the Olympic and Paralympic Games is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and we’ll make it count for Queensland with a lasting legacy,” he says.
“We now have the gameplan for 2032 and beyond, and it’s time to put it into action.”
A 63,000-seat stadium planned for Victoria Park already looks set to be challenged in court, according to media reports.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that an indoor arena was needed for Brisbane that won’t involving residents having to head north to the current entertainment centre site.
Brisbane 2032 Games Organising Committee President Andrew Liveris said both they and the International Olympic Committee were consulted beforehand.
“We will move swiftly to make operational assessments and to align our venue master plan and sports program, ready for endorsement from the IOC, International Paralympic Committee and international sport federations,” he says.
Australian Olympic Committee president Ian Chesterman welcomed the announcement.
“Today’s announcement sets out generational infrastructure that will benefit Brisbane, Queensland and Australia in the lead up to and well beyond the Games in 2032,” he said.
“The reality is the Brisbane Games are a once-in-a-generation opportunity that creates potential legacy benefits that extend far beyond just the Games.
“There are some great outcomes for some of our sports and the athletes who will be delighted about the plans.”
