Over the weekend a magnitude of people around Australia and the world turned out to protest Iran’s regime, demanding change and justice.
From Brisbane to Melbourne and Berlin to New York, hundreds of thousands of people gathered worldwide to show their support for the people of Iran who are calling for an end to the Regime.
Locally, close to 5,000 people came together in Brisbane on Saturday where demonstrators could be seen flying Iranian flags while singing Persian songs like ‘Soltan e Ghalbha (King of Hearts)’, an old Iranian love song that was sung in the honour of 16-year-old Nika Shakarami who was killed in the protests.
People were holding signs that read “Women Life Freedom” and “Down with the Dictator” while they marched down closed off streets chanting slogans like “Be Our Voice” and “Justice for Mahsa”.
Several political figures were in attendance including Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner who thanked people for coming out to show support for what he calls a global issue.
“I want to acknowledge you; I want to acknowledge each and every person that’s come out in this bleak rainy Brisbane day to talk about an issue, to protest an issue that is on the other side of the world but effects everyone,” he said.
“There are 7.9 billion people on this people, 7.9 billion lives, 7.9 billion souls yet today around the world we speak one name ‘Mahsa Amini’.”
One Brisbane protestor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that these protests show that people are united.
“When you migrate and come to another country you think you will be alone and you don’t have many people here, Saturday’s rally and what happened in Berlin shows that you are not alone,” they said.
“Despite all our differences we might have in our political views, we stand together because we find unity in our common enemy.”
While there were several thousand in Brisbane, Berlin saw an attendance that’s been labelled by some as the largest anti-regime gathering by the Iranian diaspora.
Over 80,000 people turned out to protest in Berlin where they demanded freedom for the Iranian people while substantial gatherings were seen in Downtown LA, Washington DC and New York.
A protestor in Berlin told the BBC that it was “an amazing” sight to see.
“It’s the first time that so many people in our nation are united regardless of their political beliefs before revolution and after revolution. I am really proud,” they said.

I know friends that flew in for this. I don’t think I’ve seen a protest this large from the diaspora before.

Other demonstrations could be seen in London, Toronto, Italy and various cities around the world.
Protesting against the Regime began over a month ago when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was killed by Iran’s morality police.
It’s believed by US based association Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) that 233 activists have been killed in Iran while almost 13,000 people, mostly children and young adults, detained by police.
