Cairns is on its way to becoming a bigger regional naval maintenance base after a $5 million leg up from the Queensland Government.

The Norship shipyard at Portsmith is to expand thanks to $5.37 million in state funding.

The funding comes from a $180.6 million Sovereign Industry Development Fund (SIDF) and will be used to finance wharf expansion, new Defence hardstand areas and modernising the workshops.

The work is expected to create 63 jobs (17 during construction and 46 ongoing).

Government believes this work will boost its capacity to support naval fleets in northern Australia by turning Cairns into a regional naval maintenance centre.

GROWING ROLE FOR CAIRNS

Deputy Premier and State Development Minister Jarrod Bleijie says the money “reinforces Cairns’ growing role in Australia’s defence network”.

“Cairns has a critical role to play as a regional maintenance centre and this investment reinforces its position in Australia’s defence future.

“This project will expand maritime sustainment capacity in Northern Australia, ensuring Defence assets can be maintained closer to where they operate.

“By reducing reliance on southern shipyards, we’re improving readiness while supporting local jobs, businesses and supply chains in Far North Queensland.”

The MP for Barron River, Bree James says the Far North can play a major role in strengthening Queensland industry.

“Our community has the skills, talent and determination to help drive Queensland’s sovereign capability,” she says.

Norship chief executive officer Olav Groot says the funding will allow them to expand their operations to support growing Naval needs.

“By upgrading our Cairns facility, we are strengthening our ability to maintain and service naval vessels closer to where they operate, improving efficiency and responsiveness,” he says.

“This project will not only enhance sovereign maritime capability but also deliver long-term benefits for the local workforce, suppliers and Far North Qld economy.”

Construction is under way and is due to finish in early 2028, opening shortly afterwards.
