US Vice President Kamala Harris appeared at her first campaign rally since she replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.
The rally took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Tuesday 23 July, two days after Biden’s decision to forgo re-election and one day after Harris secured enough delegates to run as her party’s nominee.
At the rally, Harris compared Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump with the criminals she encountered during her time as a court prosecutor.
“Before I was elected vice president, before I was elected United States senator, I was elected attorney general of the state of California, and I was a courtroom prosecutor before then,” said Harris.
“And in those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain.
“So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.”
Trump was convicted of all 34 counts of felony and found guilty of falsifying business records in May.
Harris has not been officially confirmed as the Democrat’s presidential nominee, which will be determined at the party’s convention next month.
Her Democrat supporters include Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
A Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday showed Harris taking a marginal lead over Trump — 44 per cent to 42 per cent.
Approximately 56 per cent of registered voters agreed with the statement that Harris was “mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges”, while 49 per cent agreed to the same statement for Trump and 22 per cent for Biden.
Al Jazeera correspondent Kimberly Halkett told the news agency from the White House Harris’s campaign will focus on four key states — Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania — as well as younger voters of colour across the North American nation.
The US presidential election is scheduled to take place on 5 November this year.
