Irish singer and activist, Sinéad O’Connor, has died at age 56 after she was found unresponsive at a private address in south London.
O’Connor was “pronounced dead at the scene”, according to Metropolitan police.
Her death is not being treated as suspicious.
The London Inner South Coroner’s Court said they were notified of her death on Wednesday 26 July.
The news release said, “No medical cause of death was given. The Coroner therefore directed an autopsy to be conducted. The results of this may not be available for several weeks.”
Once the results are known, the coroner will decide whether an inquest into the cause of death is needed.
In a statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
In her final tweet on 17 July, O’Connor opened up about her struggles since losing her son to suicide in early 2022.
O’Connor expressed that she had “been living as an undead night creature” since his death.
Sinead O’Connor is being remembered as a lifelong advocate for the rights of women and children.
The singer became a global superstar with her rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” — making history as the first female winner of an MTV Video Music Award.
She was banned for life from Saturday Night Live after tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during her performance in 1992.
She encouraged the audience to “fight the real enemy” after allegations were made against the Catholic Church in Ireland for covering up child abuse.
O’Connor detailed the incident in her 2021 memoir Rememberings.
In 2018, she proudly converted to Islam and adopted the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat, but continued to use the name Sinéad O’Connor professionally.
She is survived by three of her four children.
