Queensland fans of art deco may want to head south to Sydney at the end of the month.
The Sydney Fair is celebrating 100 years of art deco at the Royal Randwick Racecourse with a nod to ancient Egypt and imperial China.
The fair runs from Wednesday, May 29, to Sunday, June 1.
For those not in the know, art deco is a visual art and architecture design form that appeared in Paris just before World War I and flourished in the US and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.
This year’s Fair will bring together 59 of Australia’s top antique and design dealers under the one roof.
Visitors can expect to see furniture, fine art, decorative arts, jewellery, vintage fashion, couture, designer pieces, rare books, prints, posters, antiquities and objets d’art (ornamental artwork), ranging in age from BC to the modern day.
A showcase of art deco ‘treasures’ includes flapper dresses, headdresses, rare jewellery and Egyptian revival pieces, a nod to the global fascination sparked by the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
On Saturday (May 31) afternoon, there will be a live fashion parade while the next day (June 1), crowd favourite Claudia Chan Shaw will talk about the influence of art deco on architecture, fashion, and design.
Pieces from the upcoming movie R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) will be presented including original dresses, lamps, and furniture.
