Emergency workers have rescued a pilot trapped inside his helicopter after he crashed into a Melbourne home.
The crash involved a 47-year-old man who was doing a flight procedure from a local airport as part of his training.
Ambulance services reported that the pilot only received injuries to his lower body and remains in a stable condition.
The student pilot was rushed to The Alfred Hospital for medical attention due to the injuries sustained in the crash.
Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau Angus Mitchell says the helicopter in question appears to have crashed while conducting “a missed approach procedure” from a nearby airport.
“As part of its investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and any witnesses, and obtain and review recorded data, weather information, aircraft information and maintenance records,” a spokesperson said.
“The ATSB will publish a final report, detailing contributing factors and any identified safety issues, at the conclusion of the investigation.
“However, should any critical safety issues be identified at any stage during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken.”
Police have also closed off the road surrounding the house to investigate the area and ensure the house and street remain safe from further accident.
Police Sr Sgt Andrew Wise says“It’s very early stages in the investigation.”
“All we know is that there was a single occupant in the helicopter and we’re unsure of the cause of the accident at the stage.”
At the time of the crash no residents were inside of the home.
Currently it is not known what caused the student pilot’s helicopter to crash into a Melbourne home.
An investigation is under the way, but it is likely to take time before a cause for this incident is known.
