BRISBANE flies to Sydney tomorrow for its round one 2025 AFL season opening clash against Sydney this Saturday after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred disrupted plans.
After their opening round clash with Geelong was postponed, the Lions had an intraclub hit-out last Wednesday but have not trained since, AFL.com.au says.
Gold Coast plan to fly to Perth, as originally scheduled, on Saturday to face West Coast the next day.
Following four days of weather disruptions, Brisbane had an indoor session and decided to leave home early in search of better weather.
Brisbane football manager Danny Daly told AFL.com.au that the club’s first priority was to ensure everyone was safe and sound before travel plans were locked in.
“The past week has been very unprecedented and not what we had planned for, but these things do happen from time to time unfortunately,” he said.
“We are just grateful everyone has been able to get through it so far.”
“These things happen unfortunately in life, and you just need to be resilient, be calm about it and work your way through it.
“I’ve got no doubt our preparation will be spot on leading into our game against Sydney.”
Meanwhile, Gold Coast staff and players were left without power as the former cyclone smashed into the region over the weekend.
The club was given Monday off with the players’ car park and entrance to their Carrara training headquarters under water.
RESULTS
Meanwhile, Hawthorn scored a 20-point victory over beaten grand finalist Sydney at the SCG on Friday, AFL.com.au reported.
The Hawks ran out 14.12 (96) to 11.10 (76) victors after the season start was delayed by 24 hours when the two Queensland opening round games were postponed.
Greater Western Sydney registered a 52-point thumping of Collingwood with a 15.14 (104) to 6.16 (52) triumph on Sunday.
The rest of the opening round games are due to be played this weekend.
INJURY NEWS
Hawks midfielder James Worpel escaped surgery but will be sidelined for at least a month with an ankle injury picked up at the SCG.
Worpel was substituted at half-time after his ankle was trapped underneath him in a tackle by Swans ruckman Brodie Grundy.
