Nick Kyrgios has been sued over a comment he made about a Wimbledon spectator who he alleged had been drunk and kept interrupting his points.
A woman by the name of Anna Palus has initiated legal proceedings against Kyrgios over claims his comment was a false allegation that caused her damage.
During his match against Novak Djokovic several weeks ago, the 27-year-old spoke to the empire and claimed that Ms Palus had been talking to him during the match.
The empire asked Kyrgios to show him the spectator, with the tennis star pointing at Ms Palus saying “The one with the dress, the one who looks like she’s had about 700 drinks, bro!”.
It’s alleged by Ms Palus that this comment caused her harm as it was a “reckless and entirely baseless allegation”.
“Not only did this cause considerable harm on the day, resulting in my temporary removal from the arena, but Mr Kyrgios’s false allegation was broadcast to, and read by, millions around the world, causing me and my family very substantial damage and distress,” she said.
Ms Palus went onto say that she’s not litigious but will do what she needs to clear her name.
She is being represented by solicitors from Brett Wilson LLP-specialists in media and litigation- and has said that any damages she is awarded will be donated to charity.
“I hope that Kyrgios will reflect on the harm he has caused me and my family and offer a prompt resolution to this matter,” she said.
“However, if he is unwilling to do this, I am committed to obtaining vindication in the High Court.”
According to the Daily Mail, Ms Palus is a 32-year-old Polish doctor.
After the match she told The Telegraph that she only had the best intentions and wanted to support Kyrgios, later apologizing for speaking to the Australian tennis player.
Kyrgios has yet to comment on the matter.
