Full strength beer is coming back to certain stadiums in NSW on a six-month trial basis.
The state government says the trial kicks off this weekend at Parramatta stadium for all NRL, NRLW and A-Leagues matches with Accor and Newcastle stadiums also involved.
Parramatta stadium will host three matches this weekend: Panthers-Roosters in the NRL clash tonight, the Western Sydney Wanderers-Melbourne Victory in the A League on Saturday and Parramatta Eels-Wests Tigers on Sunday.
Fans in general public areas will now have access to full-strength, mid-strength, light and zero alcohol options.
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper claims western Sydney fans have been treated differently to those in the east.
“We announced … free public transport to games at (Parramatta) and (now) we are again making full-strength beer available to those in the West and the Hunter,” he says.
“We recognise that fans have been calling for this for a while.”
MP for Riverstone Warren Kirby claims the decision brings “much needed equity” between city and suburban fans.
“This decision is not about encouraging people to ‘get on the beers’,” he claims.
“It recognises everyone, whether they are in the Eastern Suburbs, Western Sydney or Newcastle, can be equally responsible in their consumption of alcohol.
“The selection of beer offered should not be restricted by where you are going to watch the footy.”
REMINDER
The success of the trial will be determined after talks with NSW Police, liquor authorities, sport and entertainment partners and fan feedback, the government says.
Venues NSW and NSW Police will ensure the responsible service of alcohol, as has always.
Fans are encouraged to use public transport as part of their ticket and to have a Plan B if drinking alcohol.
- Bundaberg Rum has announced it signed a new four-year sponsorship deal with the NRL.
The company will retain naming rights for NRL Super Saturday and Captain’s Challenge across the men’s and women’s competitions.
